Automotive Systems Technology

The automotive servicing field has changed drastically in the past ten years. To work on newer vehicles you not only have to understand the basics, you must also understand computer diagnosis. At one time a mechanic was someone who just repaired vehicles with tools. Today a technician has to be able to repair vehicles with tools as well as with electronic equipment.

The Automotive Systems Technology program covers all of the automotive systems to prepare students for a successful career. It starts with the basics and progressively moves to more advanced technology. An automotive background is not necessary to qualify for this curriculum. Upon completion of this program, students should be prepared to take the ASE exam and be ready for full-time employment in dealerships and repair shops.

Program Includes:

  • Electrical Systems
  • Theory
  • Servicing and Operation of Brakes
  • Engine Performance
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Automatic Transmission/Transaxles
  • Engine Repair
  • Climate Control
  • Manual Drivetrains

Employment:

There are many different job opportunities in the automotive field. Some graduates work in specialized shops that work only on certain systems such as electrical, transmissions, or brakes. Opportunities also exist in dealerships where technicians can work on a particular product line. There are also independent garages that allow graduates to work on all types of vehicles. A wide variety of job opportunities exist for qualified technicians.

The average starting salary is about $21,000 a year, but varies depending on the graduate’s abilities. Salaries will increase tremendously as skills and experiences grow. Successful Master Diagnostic Technicians can earn over $65,000 a year plus chances to compete with other technicians in diagnostic skill competitions for awards and bonuses.

The Automotive Systems Technology Department at Wake Technical Community College offers an AAS degree. Click on the curriculum below to view the course outline.
