Construction Management Technology Department

A construction manager is trained in the basic skills required to manage a construction job site from concept to finished product. These projects range from simple structures like small houses, concrete driveways, or barns to more complex commercial buildings and even roads, bridges, and other large-scale construction projects. A degree in construction management effectively arms the graduate with the academic and practical tools necessary to enter easily into a secure, ever-expanding, and opportunity–filled industry. As populations increase, so will opportunities for construction managers.

Coursework Includes:

  • Construction Management Fundamentals
  • Construction Methods and Materials
  • Blueprint Reading
  • Planning and Scheduling
  • Construction Estimating
  • Costs and Productivity
  • Total Safety Performance

Employment:

The construction industry actively seeks project managers, site superintendents, division managers, building inspectors, project estimators, crew leaders, general contractors, and others who possess skills and knowledge in the various aspects of the industry. In the Triangle area alone, construction is booming, and local demographers predict the boom will last for many years, even decades.

Salaries for construction managers vary with the type of job performed, but many entry-level managers start at $17-$20 per hour. With larger companies, salaries can start as high as $45,000 per year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median income for a construction manager in 2004 was $69,870. This number can go higher based on the construction manager’s experience and size of the project.

The Construction Management Technology Department at Wake Technical Community College offers two programs at this time, an AAS degree and a certificate. Click below to view the appropriate course outline:
